In the Andoas community, we have tested 46 individuals upon request. Two proved HIV positive. We negotiated their passage to Iquitos on the oil company plane, and arranged their stay in one of the Lazos de Vida houses and their introduction to the antiretroviral treatment program at the Hospital Iquitos. The patients are also receiving economic support from our program so that they may stay in Iquitos during the time necessary to establish the efficacy and regularity of their treatment.

Juan: A Patient’s Story

Juan entered the free antiretroviral treatment program at the Hospital Regional. Because he was too ill to work, his wife took on an extra shift at her job to make ends meet.
